uts turned 20

last week uts turned 20 and celebrated with a big band at the alumni green and several other things going on at the concourse level. If anyone is wondering, the WU is 110 years old!

However, I didn't stay there for long and met Michi and 2 other Austrians at Darling Harbour to watch u2 3D at the Imax cinema. Afterwards we had a great time at several pubs on broadway.

surfing

look at me! Last Saturday Michi and I met at circular quay, took the ferry to manly and took a surfing course at the beach. It was sunny, amazing, exhausting and the water tastes very salty (I know for sure... I swallowed a lot)

meeting steffen

steffen, the danish bloke, is back in sydney. It's amazing how fast these months flew by.
however he helped me with planning my trip to the east coast and we will go out on Wednesday before he flies back home.

I have already finished one of my subjects and now only have to study for my 3 final exams

uts wird 20

Letzte Woche feierte die UTS mit einer Big band am alumi green und einigen anderen Sachen am Concourse level ihren 20 Geburtstag. Falls sich irgendjemand jetzt fragt wie alt die Wu ist... 110!

Wie auch immer... Bin nicht lange dort geblieben, sondern hab mich mit Michi und 2 anderen Österreichern am Darling Harbour getroffen um u2 3D im Imax Kino zu sehen und den Tag in ein paar Pubs am broadway ausklingen zu lassen.

Surfen

Da schau her! Michi und ich haben uns letzten Samstag am Circular quay getroffen, haben die Fähre nach Manly genommen und einen Surfing Kurs gemacht. Es war sonnig, atemberaubend, anstrengend und das Wasser sehr salzig (Ich bin mir ganz sicher... hab' ja auch genug geschluckt)

Steffen, der Däne, ist wieder zurück in Sydney. Es ist verrückt wie schnell die Zeit hier vergangen ist. Wie auch immer, Steffen hat mir geholfen meinen Ostküsten-Plan zu perfektionieren und wir werden Mittwochs nochmals fortgehen bevor er nachhause fliegt

Prüfungen

Ein Fach hab' ich jetzt schon ganz abgeschlossen, warten somit nur mehr 3 Prüfungen auf mich

all my group projects are already over. I haven't got all the grades for them yet though.
so.. 3 more final exams and 3 weeks to go at uts.

nun sind endlich alle meine gruppenprojekte vorbei. nur alle noten dafuer hab ich noch nicht. somit sinds nur mehr 3 endpruefungen und 3 wochen an der uts.

as the semester is ending soon, I got some of my assignments back and more and more details about the final exams are given. In contrast to austria, it's obviously not possible to get the best grade (HD, High Distinction) in some subjects. At least that's what fellow students said and one of my lecturerers confirmed it. What's more, they sometimes scale the results so that it represents a bell courve... Hm... that may make sense here, but it's definitely lacking transparency and as the WU is going to convert them to the Austrian system, I'm not too happy with it

however, the results so far are quite good and I just have to motivate myself to learn for the final exams...

yesterday, a whole bunch of exchange students met at Cronulla to have another (maybe the last?) bbq together. I couldn't find them for an hour so I strolled through Cronulla, the wine and food festival that was going on and walked along the beaches. i have to admit that Cronulla is a very nice place and I should have visited these beaches earlier...
it's unbelievable that this semester is almost over and I'm going to leave Australia in ~65 days

Da das Semester schon bald vorbei ist, hab ich ein paar meiner assignments zurückbekommen und auch über die Abschlussprüfungen wird immer mehr bekannt. Im Gegensatz zu Österreich, ist es offensichtlich nicht möglich in einigen Vorlesungen die beste Note zu bekommen (HD, High Distinction). Zumindest haben mir das Studenten hier so erklärt, und auch einer meiner Vorlesenden hat das bestätigt. Was noch dazu kommt, ist dass sie die Resultate am Ende auch ab und zu noch so skalieren, dass sie einer Gaußschen Glockenkurve entsprechen. Auch wenn das hier vielleicht Sinn macht, meiner Meinung nach fehlt es an Transparenz und da die WU hier wohl nach schema F (HD=1, D=2, C=3...) umrechnen wird, bin ich nicht sonderlich glücklich damit...

Wie auch immer.. die Resultate sind bis jetzt ganz gut und ich muss ich nur noch durchringen für die Prüfungen zu lernen.

1 Gruppenpräsentation und 3 Prüfungen warten noch auf mich!

Auch wenn ich es schon zuvor auf Andreas Blog gelesen hab', 'Inspector Rex' auf SBS in Deutsch mit englischen Untertiteln anzusehen, ist irgendwie ziemlich witzig.

Gestern haben sich mal wieder eine ganze Menge Austauschstudenten getroffen um in Cronulla ein weiteres (vielleicht das letzte) BBQ zu veranstalten. Da ich sie anfangs nicht finden konnte, bin ich durch Cronulla, das wine and food festival und auf den stränden herumspaziert. Ich muss schon sagen, dass Cronulla ein nettes Örtchen ist an den ich vielleicht schon früher fahren hätte sollen...
Es ist unbegreiflich wie schnell das Semester vorbeigeht... Mein Aufenthalt hier endet schon in ca. 65 Tagen

Greyhound races, records everywhere, midterm exams, WU contact hours

Greyhound races
After a a nice day in the zoo, it was time to lose some money at Greyhound races at Wentworth park (I wrote my exams there!). 10 races, each taking approximately 2 minutes and believe me, names are not the perfect measure to chose the winning dog. After paying 5,5 to get in, losing another 10$ (my dogs 'always' came in LAST!) + some dollars for ice cream, the total loss was still below 20 bucks.. so we went on to have a drink at the next pub

I told you about the mildest february in 16 years.. and there was something else with march. not too sunny over here at the moment

midterm exams and assignments,
I got my 2 exams and my first assignment back and the results were good. Still 4 group assignments, 2 Individual assignments and 3 final exams(11,19,20 june) to go.

Wu contact hours:
this calculation is driving me nuts! after 500 emails and talking to the international exchange office I think I will end up with 42 contact hours per subject and as a result will only get 2sws accredited back home as the "Studienrechtsabteilung" divides by 15.

Hunderennen
Nach einem schönen Tag im Zoo war es Zeit ein wenig Geld bei Hundrennen zu verlieren. Im Wentworth park (wo ich schon meine Prüfungen hatte) fanden 10 Rennen statt, jedes ungefähr 2 Minuten lang. Übrigens nach Namen zu gehen scheint nicht die perfekte Strategie zu sein um den Gewinner zu erraten. 5,5 Eintritt, 10$ Verluste bei den Wetten (Mein Hund war "immer" Letzter) und ein paar Dollar für Eis, beliefen sich die Verluste noch immer unter 20 Kröten und somit gings ab ins nächste Pub.

Nach dem kältesten Februar seit 16 Jahren, nun 12 (oder waren es 13?) Regentage in Folge. Irgendwas war auch mit dem März, aber ich kann mich nicht mehr erinnern. Auf alle Fälle ist das Wetter hier derzeit nicht so wie es sein sollte

4 Gruppenarbeiten, 2 Einzelarbeiten und 3 Endprüfungen(11,19,20 Juni) übrig

Wu contact hours:
Diese Herumrechnerei mach mich wahnsinnig. Nach 500 mails und Gesprächen mit dem International Exchange Office werd ich wohl mit 42 contact hours pro Kurs aussteigen. Besonders doof weil man ab 45 2 sws in Österreich bekommt (Studienrechtsabteilung dividiert durch 15)
