sandboarding, dolphin watching, presentations and my flat mates

on saturday I headed north to anna bay (sandboarding) and port stephens (dolphin watching)... actually the dolphin watching thing wasn't too exciting.. but the sandboarding was incredible (as in Chile) ... even more fun was jumping of the edge of the dune and landing softly several meters below.

Due to the fact that there are a lot of group projects at uts, there are several group presentations as well... well you may think.. uni.. presentations.. been there, done that.. but! obviously lecturers like role plays and other fancy stuff here.. so today we dressed up as old man (tony and me, kim played a postwoman) an presented amazon from the perspective of two members of a book club... how hilarious!

Samstags gings nach Norden zur anna bay (sandboarding) und port stephens (delfine beobachten)... Die Delfine waren ehrlich gesagt ziemlich unspektakulär... aber sandboarden war mal wieder der Hammer (war ja in Chile schon genial ).. noch genialer war jedoch von der Düne zu springen und mehrere Meter weiter unten weich zu landen.

Da man auf der UTS viele Gruppenarbeiten hat, hat man natürlich auch viele Gruppenpräsentationen... ihr werdet euch jetzt wohl denken.. Uni.. präsentationen.. alles schon gehabt... aber.. scheinbar stehen sich die Vorlesenden hier auf Rollenspiele und anderes kreatives Zeug und somit schlüpften Tony und Ich heute in die Rolle zweier alter Buchklubmitglieder um Amazon aus deren Perspektive vorzustellen.. wie verrückt!

there are definitely a lot of things to do in sydney... it's however funny as well to just
start somewhere in the city and have a look at all the interesting things going on.
Two weeks ago i put on my running shoes and started at hyde park, had a look at the Anzac memorial and the hyde park baracks museum, ran through the domain, entered a free photo exhibition, ran through the botanic gardens, had a nice walk at circual quay, visited the market at the rocks, ran from darling harbour back to market city, bought some fruits at paddy's market and headed back home.. wuhu

in Sydney gib es definitv viel zu sehen und zu tun... es ist jedoch auch witzig einfach irgendwo mitten in der Stadt anzufangen und ohne wirkliches Ziel sich einfach anzusehen was gerade los ist.
Vor zwei Wochen, mit meine Laufenschuhen bewaffnet, bin ich im Hyde Park gestartet, hab mir das Anzac Denkmal und das Hyde park baracks museum angesehen, bin durch the domain gelaufen, hab eine gratis foto ausstellung besucht, bin durch die botanischen gärten gelaufen, am circular quay entlang spaziert, hab den markt in the rocks besucht, von darling harbour zurück zur market city gelaufen um dort obst zu kaufen und dann endlich wieder daheim anzukommen.. wuhu

Taronga zoo - The zoo with the view

On Sunday 27 April the saladbowl society (a societ full of international students) planned a trip to taronga zoo. As I had heard quite a lot about the beautiful view (Taronga is an Aboringinal word and means 'beautiful view') got up early and joined them. Unfortunately I was the only person showing up... As a result only Anderson, Oahn (both saladbowl executives) and Me took the ferry to Taronga and had a very nice day in the zoo. (it was the first sunny day for ages!)

Especially the bird show was very nice. And i met Timon! and a Firefox (Logo of the famous Browser = Red Panda).. wuuhu!

Am Sonntag 27 April hatte die Saladbowl society (ein Klub mit vielen Internationalen Studenten) einen Trip zum Taronga zoo geplant. Da ich zuvor so viel Gutes gehört hatte, besonders über die Aussicht (Taronga bedeuted "Wundervolle Aussicht" in der Sprache der Aboriginee) bin ich extra früh aufgestanden um mitzufahren. Leider war ich auch der einzige der davon so begeistert war und somit waren Anderson, Oahn (beide Executives des Klubs) und ich nur zu dritt. Mit der Fähre ging's ab nach Taronga und wir hatten ziemlich viel Spaß! (vor allem da es der erste sonnige Tag seit langem war!)

Besonders die Vogel-Show war sehr beeindruckend. Auch Timon und einen Firefox (Im Logo des Browsers zu finden.=Red Panda) hab ich gesehen.. WUHU!

Anzac Day

Friday 25 April was Anzac day.

what is anzac day?
According to wikipedia:

Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. The acronym ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, whose soldiers were known as Anzacs. The pride they took in that name endures to this day, and Anzac Day remains one of the most important national occasions of both Australia and New Zealand.

As I slept in, I missed the dawn service (that was to early anyway) and saw the march only on tv. However I went to the sunset service at 16:00 to get a glance at this tradition and it was quite interesting. While the definition above only mentions World War I, I had the feeling that World War II plays an important role at ANZAC day as well. While strolling through the city, I saw a lot of peope in their uniforms, wearing them with pride.
The slogan "lest we forget" outlines how important this day for Australians is and I felt quite awkward as Austrians usually want to forget as fast as possible...

Der 25. April ist der Jahrestag der ersten Militäraktion von australischen und neuseeländischen Truppen im Ersten Weltkrieg, der Landung auf Gallipoli (Gelibolu - Türkei) im Jahr 1915. Für das Nationalbewusstsein des erst wenige Jahre zuvor unabhängig gewordenen Australien war dieser Militäreinsatz von erheblicher Bedeutung und wurde als eine Art „Blutopfer“ verstanden. Der Feiertag wurde schon 1916 offiziell als ANZAC-Day bezeichnet.

Da ich leider zu lange geschlafen hab', hab ich nicht nur die Morgenwache (die war aber sowieso zu früh) vermisst, sondern auch den Gedenkmarsch nur im Fernsehen gesehen. Am Abend bin ich dann jedoch zum Sunset-Service um 16:00 gegangen um einen Eindruck von diesem für Australier wichtigen Tag zu bekommen. Es war wirklich interessant! Während die Definition in Wikipedia nur den ersten Weltkrieg umfasst, hatte ich den Eindruck, dass der Weltkrieg nun eine nahezu ebenso wichtige Rolle spielt. Beim bummeln durch die Stadt sah man jede Menge Uniformierte Soldaten, Polizisten etc, die ihre Uniform mit Stolz zur Schau stellten.Das Motto "lest we forget"(Auf das wir niemals vergessen mögen) zeigt wie wichtig dieser Tag für Australier ist... Für mich ein ziemlich komisches Gefühl, da Österreicher üblicherweise so schnell wie möglich vergessen wollen...

manly beach - exams

As I have to study a lot, just a short entry to keep you up to date :

I have to exams (Wednesday and Thursday) and as a result spend most of the last 2 weeks in my room, reading my books.

On saturday, however, I was able to join the Outdoor Adventure Club on a very nice trip: Spit to manly beach walk.
